The Buffalo Sabres nearly completed a blockbuster trade involving Kaapo Kakko and New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba. However, Trouba used his no-movement clause to block the move, similar to his earlier rejection of a trade with the Detroit Red Wings.
Rangers GM Chris Drury continues to explore trade options for Trouba, with potential destinations including the Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks. If Trouba were to waive his clause for the Sabres, Red Wings, or Ducks, a trade could happen quickly. Currently, a buyout or a third-line pairing role appears most likely.
Despite the setback, the Sabres remain interested in Kakko, hoping the young forward can help end their 13-year playoff drought. Buffalo and New York had nearly finalized a deal for both players, which would have significantly cleared cap space for the Rangers. Trouba may stay with the Rangers for another season if no trade occurs.
