The Detroit Red Wings have been missing Jeff Petry since early January when he was hurt against the Blue Jackets, but his eventual return could cause an issue.

The Red Wings haven't had veteran defenseman Jeff Petry in their lineup since he was injured in their 5-4 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on January 2.

Since then, they've gone with rookie Albert Johansson on the blue line in his place, and he's responded by playing well. He also scored his very 1st goal at the NHL level earlier in the month as part of Detroit's win over the Chicago Blackhawks:

In the meantime, Petry continues to skate and is on a training program to work himself back into game shape.

Head coach Todd McLellan explained following today's practice at Little Caesars Arena that Petry not only had a good skate yesterday, but continued his treatment today and is on schedule.

He just - he's on a schedule and had a good skate yesterday and treatment today. I'm not sure what's on the program for him tomorrow, but it's all part of the schedule.

One of the benefits that Petry brings to the back end is his right-handed shot which they've used while on the power play.

When Petry is healthy enough to return, the Red Wings have a unique decision to make.

Todd McLellan has lauded the play of Albert Johansson

Since his arrival back in Detroit on December 26, McLellan stated that his biggest surprise is the play of Johansson, whom he didn't know much about upon taking over for the terminated Derek Lalonde.

Probably the biggest surprise for me to date is Albert. I knew nothing of Albert; we got here and he's kind of parked not he shelf and everyone is playing, and we're trying to figure players out.
